Challenges and Solutions in Scientific Logistics
Seven years ago, B&A won a bidding process and took on the logistics for the laboratories affiliated with the Brazilian Center for Physical Research (CBPF). Through a cooperation agreement, this initiative benefits more than 15 federal research institutions from various fields across several Brazilian states.
Transporting materials such as high-precision equipment, chemical substances, and radioactive shipments requires expertise and meticulous planning. “Each shipment is unique and demands extra attention,” explains Valeria Barbosa, CEO of B&A.
One of the most challenging projects was the transportation of 14 radioactive sources for the study “Intercomparison of Radioactive Sources in Medical Equipment,” developed by the Institute of Radioprotection and Dosimetry (IRD). These sources were sent to 14 laboratories around the world to ensure the accuracy of radiation doses in medical examinations. The operation required in-depth knowledge of international standards and the safe handling of hazardous materials.
Another milestone was the importation of the atomic clock—a crucial piece of equipment for Brazilian science and technology that reduces reliance on foreign technology. In addition, B&A coordinated the delivery of equipment for the upgrade of the Santos Dumont Supercomputer at the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing (LNCC). With 20 tons transported from France, Santos Dumont has become the most powerful supercomputer in Latin America for academic research.
